I do not have words strong enough to describe the beauty, integrity and impact of Senator Harris Wofford. His contributions, significant and mostly unsung, helped redefine our nation. From his relentless pursuit of good during the civil rights movement to, as I had the great fortune to be part of, reigniting the spark of service in America, Harris was inimitable. It is one of my life’s great pleasures to have known him, worked with him and counted him a friend.

Thirty years ago, we worked together with President George H.W. Bush to create the President’s Youth Service Awards. Because of him, we realized a dream of creating a nation of youth in service to others. For twenty-five years, he shaped the impact of the Jefferson Awards by serving on our Board of Selectors. Each time I was with him I was in awe of his goodness and his contributions to our country. To me, he was the living embodiment of a saint. May his legacy inspire all of us to multiply the good we see.

Harris, for a lifetime of service to others, we salute you!

In service,
